Back to Holland

So I'm heading to Holland in, erm, 20 minutes time. Again. I was there last weekend too.

But I'm guessing the two weekends couldn't be more different. Last weekend I was with my lovely Irish Dutch Friend who took me out and we painted the town red. Well, actually it was more of a subtle shade of pink, but we certainly painted the town.

Friday night in Den Haag, followed by Saturday night in Rotterdam and both nights we managed to stagger home at 5am. We spent our waking hours dancing (yes, to American Boy, of course) and drinking fancy cocktails. We may or may not have chased dutchmen.

This weekend I'm going to Amsterdam to meet the newest addition to my family. My best friend and his wife have had a little girl and I get to meet her this weekend. I love babies, but I'm not so good with them. And I only really love them for a ten minute hold. But I really love these friends and so I'm incredibly excited about meeting their latest.

I'm guessing the weekend will involve late nights sat around the post-dinner table, chatting, reminiscing, sharing music and laughing lots.

So two weekends that are very different, but with one factor in common - the joy and pleasure of spending time with good friends, enjoying life and laughing.

Really, I am blessed.

Now, how do I get out of changing nappies?

I usually drop in a line about dropping my nephew once and that usually procludes me from any baby related activities .....

Anthony, I think that may work. Although they know that I am largely inept when it comes to such tasks....

easy: spill your martini on the kid while "Attempting to Change him...her...it" or simply put the diaper on backwards. doing something irrevocably wrong is the best way to make sure you never get asked to do it again.

CG - I have no intention of going anywhere near a diaper - clean, dirty or otherwise.

I tell the parents that it makes me love their kid less.

Aw! How cool! I have no doubt that your last weekend would have been nothing short of awesome. Weekends with Conortje always are, if I recall.

I'm sure this one will be just as brill... only for different reasons.

Enjoy!

Tell them you have some kind of disease on your skin - mostly on your hands...(I'm detecting a trend in my comments these days - are you? - Wait a sec - it's your fault - they are your posts I'm responding to!)

Sounds like the perfect weekend. I can't wait till two friends I really adore have a baby it will be so exciting to see the little person they've produced. Just make sure you take your earplugs. Bon weekend!

Pretend you have a skin condition that precludes touching wet/dirty nappies

Have an excellent time. Once again I'm jealous!

Changing "nappies" is the daddy's job, and you are not the daddy. Just don't do it!

Maybe if you act uncomfortable enough after your 10-minute-hold, they will be afraid to ask you to change her.

I'm not so good with babies, either. Only my own were OK.

Have a lovely weekend! Well, maybe you could (or could not) chase Dutchmen to get out of diaper duty!

You can get out of changing nappies by claiming that you haven't had your polio booster (seriously) as all people who are going to get up to their wrists in baby poo should bear in mind that those nappies can contain dodgy bugs if the baby has just had her jabs.

Or just run out of the room screaming, whichever seems appropriate at the time.

Just laugh if they even dare ask, as if it was the most hilarious joke you've ever heard. After all, they must be kidding, right?

Alan, weekend with Conortje was indeed brill. Fantastic. You've got to love that boy.

Aims, I have no such awful disease, nor would I pretend to have one...why you would want me to pretend to be disfigured I don't now!

Daisy, earplugs not necessary, baby slept soundly. And was beautiful...

Daryl, you seem to be with Aims on the pretending you are contagious front - that's just nasty!

CB - don't be jealous, get on a plane. I'll show you the sights of Paris....eventually ;-)

Louise, I fell in love - with the baby. Oh my, did I fall!

SM - running out of the room screaming wouldn't surprise them. I usually do that when any kind of 'chore' is mentioned... ha ha

12oti - they know well enough not to ask - trust me, they do!
