...must come to an end.
I'm typing this, surrounded by mayhem, madness and the detritus of my life.
Tonight I must switch of the Mac, for tomorrow the men arrive with their boxes and muscles to move me 400 kilometres north, to Paris.
Sad? Yes.
I have this feeling that I could have done so much more with my time here in Lyon if only I hadn't ended up spending the last two years on planes, trains and in hotel rooms.
I hate 'if only' but I wonder about the friends I never made (I made a few, but not enough) and the dates I never went on (ditto).
I know that Paris is a whole new beginning - a different job in a different set-up. I know it is a great opportunity to get some normality back into my life.
But I worry that, once I stop travelling so much, life will find me. That I'll have to get me a life. I'll have to actually get out there and search one out. Track one down.
Anyone got any suggestions? I'm scared.

I was thinking about you and your move - I know that feeling so well, from travelling all the time...that I was never really "there" (wherever I happened to be living at the time) and only in retrospect could I see what was really special about the place, and what might have been. But every move is a fresh start and you're taking with you that much more knowledge of yourself. Which is no advice at all, but just good luck wishes and..envy?
Course you're scared. Transitions, especially big ones are scary.
I haven't got any suggestions but I know you've got enough 'joie de vivre' (see I'm picking up French:-) to carve out a good life for yourself in Paris - and we'll we waiting to hear all about it. The good and the bad. xx
One good thing about your recent situation, i.e, no time to "get a life" as you say (though frankly I quite like the sound of yours), is that you started to write your blog. Hopefully this helped you find something that you are looking for, but I can tell you your blog has given quite a few people a lot of pleasure to read.
Don't waste time or energy on regrets. You're living your life as it comes and whatever you do next, that's what life has in store for you. Just enjoy it.
Now for the next chapter....... hope you'll still have time to blog.
Yow aye done bad for a Brummie lad.
It's funny -- odd, really -- how our lives on the road are so different than our lives at home. Each must be adjusted and tweaked frequently to be sure that we are on the right path -- the journey to happiness. In Paris, Portland, or elsewhere. Enjoy it for what it is.
And while you were busy doing that I was helping my good friend here get ready for his own move to Paris. He was having the very same feelings as you and I have to say some have brushed off on me too. I am envious of you two though. I want to leave, I just don't know to where or how...
My suggestion is: stop worrying about living and just live. Life will take care of itself, you'll either miss travelling or you won't, but I'm sure you'll continue to have adventures. You seem the kind of guy that interesting things happen to!
Hmm, well, what helped me when I moved to Rotterdam was to make sure our house is all set to have friends over (we put my old single bed in the study, and our couch folds out to a bed as well, we have a large dinner table which can easily be moved up to the wall so the sitting area becomes larger) so that it's very easy for friends to come over and stay for a while. It helps if you have hobbies you can start practising in Paris (join a club for instance, so you meet new people) and search out a few favourite spots where you can meet some locals. Other than that, make sure your new life is comfortable - if you feel good it's easier to meet new people and 'sort out' your life in your new hometown.
Take a deep breath, Travelling.
It's a scary time but also a wonderful opportunity.
You have a clean slate.
Anything's possible.
how can the thought of muscular, ursine frenchman hefting your worldly posessions make you sad..?
You do have my sympathies TBNIL. First of all for being a Mac owner :0)...but secondly - I do understand that heartache that comes with that one last look around a place where you have (tried) to live.
Leaving anything that has instilled memories of one sort or another is hard to do. The closing of the door after that last look around at an empty space - hard. Very hard.
By the time you set up that poor Mac again and get these comments - you'll already have had some great and new experience and you'll be looking forward to more in your freshly painted abode.
Now - if we hear that you have to move from Paris....well....
Never regret the things you do, only regret the things you don't do. So let Paris take you by the hand, and find a new life with her.
I mean the city, not the Hilton woman. Don't live with her for goodness sake, she's barking.
Hey, lovely people. I'm mid-move, working on my company laptop (not a mac, you'll be pleased to hear, Aims..).
Anyway, move going well. I'm halfway at the moment - all packed up and goods in transit. Due for delivery tomorrow at nine. Big sleep needed, big day ahead.
Thanks all of you for your lovely words though. Really lovely....
And Tina, that girl is an attention seeking, man crazy whore. I'll be going nowhere near...

Oh I suspect that life will come calling and you will be brilliant ... and who knows maybe even end up in love ... or lust .. sometimes lust is better ... its Lyons loss and Paris' gain!

Good luck on your move I'm sure Paris will like you just as much as we do.
I don't know, if you know what life you want, just invite it. If not, be as open as possible to whatever comes. Good luck moving and settling in!
